The end of first week saw Oxford make the trip to Denham GC for their eagerly anticipated first fixture of the new season. Dark blue hopes were high with a team consisting of 9 returning OUGC players and new face Patrick Cansfield, who had impressed in his first trial round.
After a delayed start due to lightning over the course, the morning foursomes was played out under unexpected blue skies. The transatlantic pairing of Cansfield and Brian Wilson led the attack off top and secured an early point for Oxford. The next three matches, although very tight with two going down the 18th, all went the way of the home club. Seely and Bastianello managed to pull through in the bottom match, however, to set the scoreline at 3-2 going into lunch.
The world famous lunch at Denham, eaten under the safari of taxidermy which adorns the walls of the clubhouse, was superb as always. Torrential rain returned to the course which left ample time for after-lunch drinks and it was decided that the match would be decided by 9-hole foursomes matches in the afternoon.
Lunch had clearly lubricated the Oxford swings with the blues winning all of the last 4 matches in the afternoon in convincing fashion with a strong 4&3 victory for Reynolds &Cansfield, as well as 3&2 victories for Ryan & Seely and Crummey & Wilson. That left the final state of the match at 6 matches to 4 in Oxford’s favour.
Next week sees the blues head to Little Aston and Blackwell for their first full weekend fixture where they will hope to build upon their promising start to the year.
