The Blues is the Men’s First Team at Oxford. The Blues squad is decided at the start of the year and normally consists of around 18 players. Of that 18, 10 Full Blues and 2 Dinner Blues, or reserves, are eventually selected to represent the University in the Varsity Match in March.
A Blue’s week normally starts on a Wednesday with the weekly training session, either at Heythrop Park with our coaches John and Matt Cook, or at our home course, Huntercombe Golf Club. After practice, on Wednesday evening, the team for the upcoming weekend is selected based on performance at the session and throughout previous weeks. The team will then often meet at Binsey Lane driving range on a Friday evening to prepare for the weekend fixtures.
Having arrived at the host course and met the members over coffee and bacon, the morning games, usually foursomes matchplay, will get under way. After the morning session a fantastic lunch is undoubtedly laid on followed by some early afternoon settlers. Once this is finished, the afternoon golf will begin- either foursomes matchplay again or occasionally singles. At the end of the day, win or lose, everyone will meet up again in the clubhouse for a final drink and to thank the members for providing such a wonderful day of golf. On several weekends of the year, once the playing is done, the members are kind enough to lay on dinners and host the team for the evening.
