ABOUT THE BLUES

The Blues is the Men’s First Team at Oxford. The Blues squad is decided at the start of the year and normally consists of around 18 players. Of that 18, 10 Full Blues and 2 Dinner Blues, or reserves, are eventually selected to represent the University in the Varsity Match in March.

A Blue’s week normally starts on a Wednesday with the weekly training session, either at The Oxford Golf Club with our coach Sam Truman, or at our home course, Huntercombe Golf Club.

After practice, on Wednesday evening, the team for the upcoming weekend is selected based on performance at the session and throughout previous weeks. The team will then often meet at Binsey Lane driving range on a Friday evening to prepare for the weekend fixtures.

Having arrived at the host course and met the members over coffee and bacon, the morning games, usually foursomes matchplay, will get under way. The afternoon golf will involves either foursomes matchplay again or, occasionally, singles. The Blues play every weekend of Michaelmas and Hilary Term, with the Varsity Match marking the end of their season.

Whilst it is a serious time commitment, all of our players find adequate time for their studies, and possibly even benefit from a secondary focus and a break at the weekend. All golfers from the last three years have achieved either a 2.i or a 1st in their examinations.
