We are delighted to announce that for the first time in 7 years, the Oxford University Ladies won the 22nd Annual Varsity match against Cambridge University at Rye Golf Club. On Tuesday 19th March 2019, Oxford and Cambridge took to Rye’s windy fairways to battle it out over one of the biggest prizes in university golf. Oxford took a team of six, plus two reserves, and were supported valiantly by family, friends, and their coach.

After the morning pairs matches, Oxford were 2-1 down and faced another year of defeat. But in a spectacular display of golf, Oxford returned with a clean sweep of six victories in the afternoon singles matches to deliver an overall result of 7-2.

Alice Watson, captain of the Oxford team and Geography DPhil student at St John’s College, was delighted with their win: “We are absolutely over the moon to return home with the trophy for the first time in 7 years! It was an incredibly exciting day out on the course and I could not be prouder of everyone in the team. We’ve had the most wonderful year, training hard and playing lots of matches, and this trip has left us with memories to last a lifetime!”.

The annual Varsity match is hosted by different golf clubs across the country each year and held in conjunction with the men’s Blues and Divots matches. Reflecting on this year’s historic win, Alice said, “Varsity is always a fantastic event and a true celebration of women in golf.

The standard of play was incredibly high across both university teams and we are very grateful for all the support we receive from The Speed Trust”. Oxford’s victory follows a full year of fixtures, including their first ever international match against Vassar College, New York held in early March at the Oxford Golf Club. Having tasted success, the Oxford ladies can’t wait to get back out on the fairways!
